What is unique about historic properties?
All of ALA’s apartments are in beautifully maintained historic buildings dating from the 1870’s to the 1950’s. Historic apartments provide all the comfort and amenities of 21st century buildings with the added beauty and charm of the architecture and style of the time period.

Are laundry facilities available?
Most units either have on-site coin laundry or washer/dryer hookups.
Is parking available?
It depends on the property. Most properties feature designated off-street parking spaces for tenants.
What are the average utility bills?
Utility bills vary by property, your usage, and weather conditions. For most properties, water is included in your rent.

Lease Terms
Is smoking allowed?
Smoking is not permitted inside any ALA apartment building.
Are pets allowed?
Pets under 70 pounds are allowed with approval and a one-time fee of $200 per pet (non-refundable).
Can I see the lease before applying?
Yes. Please visit the Applications & Forms section to view the lease.
How much is the security deposit?
The security deposit is equal to the cost of one month’s rent. Security deposit is due upon lease signing.
Applying to Rent
How do I apply to rent?
Rental Applications may be submitted online or via hard copy. A processing fee is required for each application. Find all forms and instructions under Applications & Forms.
What is the application fee?
The application fee is $40 per tenant. This covers the cost of obtaining credit checks. A separate credit check is required for each tenant living in an ALA apartment.
How long does it take to hear back regarding my application?
Your application will be processed when all applications and application fees are received from you and your co-tenants. At that time, it usually takes less than 48 hours to receive the credit check and contact your references.
Applications are processed in first-come, first-served order, so please return your application as soon as possible.
What are the next steps if my application is accepted?
We will contact you to inform you that your application has been accepted and then prepare two copies of the rental lease for signing. All tenants must sign the lease and return it along with a check for the security deposit. Leases can be signed in person or remotely.
Prior to move-in day, please contact all applicable utility companies to establish new service accounts. The local utility providers are:

- Enbridge (Natural Gas)
- Google (Internet)
- AT&T (Phone, Internet)
On move-in day, please bring a check for the pro-rated cost of the first month’s rent. You will receive keys, an orientation, and a walkthrough of the unit.

You can submit your rental application online or on paper.

Option 1: Submit application online
- Provide applicant name(s) and email(s) to Jay Brown at jay@alaproperties.com or (919) 444-2125.
- Check your email. You should receive the secure application via Docusign within 24 hours, along with instructions on submitting your application and $40 processing fee.
Option 2: Submit application on paper
- Print and complete the Rental Application Form.
- Return the form to Jay Brown along with your $40 application fee. Contact us to set up a meeting (jay@alaproperties.com or (919) 444-2125) or mail your application to PO Box 24890, Raleigh, NC 27601.
